Solar Roofing: Power Up Without Leaks in Portland

March 4, 2025by revvluvvCommercialResidential

Solar roofing’s buzzing in the Greater Portland Area—clean energy’s a win, even with our 150+ cloudy days. The DOE says panels can cut bills 20–30%, but leaks can turn that dream into a damp, moldy mess, rotting your setup and tanking air quality. In the Pacific NW, doing solar right means beating our wet climate.

Leaks are the enemy. Solar mounts pierce your roof—poor seals around them invite rain. Portland’s relentless drizzle seeps in, rotting panel bases or decking fast. Mold follows, thriving in our humidity—small leaks become big health risks, spreading spores that hit lungs hard, per NIH studies. Wet insulation under panels traps moisture, too, slashing air quality in tight winter homes.

Installation’s key. Pros use beefy flashing—think metal shields—at mount points to block water. Tilting panels slightly (5–10 degrees) sheds rain; flat setups pool here, feeding moss that rots edges. Maintenance matters—check seals yearly. Moss loves solar’s shady undersides in Portland; scrape it off to avoid trapped dampness.

Health stays front and center. A leaky solar roof risks mold in attics or walls—20% of homes fight it, says the CDC, and our rain ups that. Clean air’s worth it; don’t let green goals backfire. Test your indoor humidity—over 60% screams trouble, per EPA.

Solar’s smart in the PNW with care. Portland gets enough sun (3–4 peak hours daily) to make it pay, but only if leaks don’t spoil it. Go in eyes open—done right, you’ll power up without health headaches. A solid roof keeps solar shining and your home thriving—don’t let our wet winters win.

The Hidden Health Benefits of a Leak-Free Roof

March 4, 2025by revvluvvUncategorized

In the Greater Portland Area, a leaky roof isn’t just a drip—it’s a health hazard. Small leaks spark big problems like mold and roofing rot, slashing your home’s air quality in our damp Pacific NW climate. Keeping water out isn’t just about repairs; it’s about wellness for your family.

Leaks start small—cracked shingles or a loose vent seal. But Portland’s 40+ inches of rain turn those into trouble fast. Water seeps into walls or ceilings, rotting wood in as little as a year or two here. Then comes mold. The NIH links molds like Aspergillus—thriving in wet PNW homes—to allergies and asthma. About 20% of U.S. homes fight mold, per CDC data, and our humidity pushes that higher.

Air quality takes the hit. Mold spores float free, especially in tight winter homes, irritating lungs and noses. Musty smells signal trouble’s already brewing. Roofing rot’s no picnic either—softened beams or decking mean structural risks, and damp insulation traps more moisture, worsening the cycle. One tiny leak can domino into a health mess.

The fix? Keep it dry. Seal leaks fast—check flashing after storms. Ventilate attics; trapped humidity’s a mold starter. Aim for indoor humidity below 50%, says the EPA—dehumidifiers help in Portland’s soggy months. Spotting early signs saves grief—damp ceiling stains or funky odors scream “act now.”

A leak-free roof’s a health win here. It blocks mold, preserves air, and keeps your home solid. In the Pacific NW, where rain’s a given, this isn’t optional—it’s essential. Invest a little time now, and your family breathes easier all year. Don’t let small leaks steal your comfort—your roof’s your first defense.

Prepping Your Roof for the Pacific NW’s Rainy Season

March 4, 2025by revvluvvResidential

The Pacific Northwest’s rainy season is relentless, especially around Portland, where soggy roofs can lead to rot and mold if you’re not ready. With over 150 rainy days a year, a little prep now stops small leaks from turning into health hazards like poor indoor air quality. Here’s your Greater Portland checklist to weather the wet.

Prep for Rain

First, tackle gutters. Pine needles and leaves pile up fast here, clogging drains. Overflow soaks roof edges, kickstarting rot that weakens shingles and decking. Clean them out—your ladder’s your friend. Next, check flashing and seals around chimneys, vents, and skylights. Portland’s humidity loves sneaking through cracks, and even small gaps let rain in, feeding mold. A quick visual scan can spot trouble—look for rust or splits.

Trees are sneaky culprits, too. Overhanging branches drop debris and snap in PNW windstorms, denting roofs or piling moss fodder. Trim them back—10 feet from your roofline’s ideal. This cuts rot risks and keeps shingles intact.

Here’s the health hook: small leaks don’t just drip—they raise indoor humidity. The EPA says mold thrives above 60% relative humidity, common in unvented Portland homes during winter. That means allergies, asthma flare-ups, and musty air—yuck. Roofing rot from unchecked water adds insult, softening beams and upping repair bills.

Action’s simple. Clean gutters twice yearly—fall and late winter. Walk your property post-storm for tree damage. Sniff indoors for mustiness—early leak clues. Don’t ignore soggy attic insulation; it’s a mold magnet. These steps keep water out and air fresh.

Portland’s wet winters test every roof, but prep keeps you ahead. A dry home’s a healthy home—don’t let the Pacific NW’s rain win. Take charge now, and breathe easy all season.

How to Spot Roof Damage Before It Worsens in Portland’s Wet Climate

March 4, 2025by revvluvvResidential

Living in the Greater Portland Area means your roof faces constant rain, wind, and moss—a recipe for hidden damage. Spotting trouble early, like cracked shingles or roofing rot, can stop small leaks from ballooning into moldy, costly disasters that tank your home’s air quality. Portland’s 40+ inches of annual rain and humidity make this a top concern—small issues here grow fast.

Start with the obvious: moss. It’s a Pacific NW staple, but it traps moisture against shingles, speeding rot. Check roof edges or shady spots—green fuzz means trouble’s brewing. Next, look for cracked or curling shingles, often from wind or age. Even tiny splits let water seep under, rotting decking and inviting mold that spreads spores indoors. Granule loss is another red flag—check your gutters. If they’re gritty with shingle bits, your roof’s wearing thin, and rain will exploit it.

Why does this matter? Small leaks don’t stay small in our climate. Water in walls or ceilings fosters mold—about 20% of U.S. homes deal with it, per the CDC, and Portland’s dampness hikes that risk. Mold means respiratory woes, allergies, and a musty house no one wants. Roofing rot weakens beams, too, threatening structure and safety.

You can DIY some detective work safely. Grab binoculars—scan for moss or missing shingles. Peek in gutters for granules. Notice damp ceiling spots or a funky smell indoors? That’s your cue to act fast. Don’t climb up without gear, though—leave that to pros if damage looks big.

In the Pacific NW, seasonal roof checks are your best defense. Catching issues early keeps your home healthy and your wallet intact. Stay ahead of Portland’s wet wrath—your roof’s your shield, so treat it right.

Replacing old, worn siding offers numerous benefits. First and foremost, new siding provides better protection against weather conditions, preventing water damage and the infiltration of pests. Additionally, modern siding materials are more energy-efficient, offering better insulation than older versions. This means not only improved comfort inside your home but also lower energy bills.

Aesthetic appeal is another compelling reason to replace your siding. New siding can completely transform the look of your home, increasing its value and appeal in the neighborhood. Whether you choose vinyl, fiber

cement, or another material, the options for colors and styles are vast, allowing you to customize your home’s appearance to your taste.

Why Reconditioning Your Commercial Roof Is a Smart Choice!

January 18, 2025by revvluvvCommercial

Why Reconditioning Your Commercial Roof Is a Smart Choice

When it comes to maintaining your commercial property, the roof is one of the most critical components to consider. The decision to recondition rather than replace your commercial roof can bring significant benefits, especially when handled by a reputable company like Elements Commercial Roofing, the best in the Pacific Northwest. Let’s explore the top reasons why reconditioning your roof with innovative solutions like silicon coatings by CertainTeed might be the best choice for your building.

Cost Savings

One of the most compelling reasons to choose reconditioning over replacement is the cost savings. Reconditioning can be significantly less expensive than a full replacement. By choosing to apply high-quality silicon coatings, such as those offered by CertainTeed, you can extend the life of your existing roof without the need for a costly tear-off and rebuild. This approach not only saves money on materials but also on labor costs.

Enhanced Durability

Silicon coatings are renowned for their durability and longevity. CertainTeed’s silicon products provide a resilient, waterproof barrier that protects your roof from UV rays, extreme temperatures, and moisture—all common challenges in the Pacific Northwest. This layer significantly enhances the roof’s lifespan, delaying the need for a complete replacement and offering you peace of mind regarding your roof’s condition.

Time Efficiency

Reconditioning a roof takes considerably less time than replacing one. This quicker turnaround means minimal disruption to your daily operations, a crucial factor for any commercial property. With Elements Commercial Roofing, you can trust that the job will be done efficiently and effectively, ensuring that your business activities can continue with little to no interruption.

Avoidance of Permits and Code Compliance Issues

A major advantage of reconditioning over replacement is avoiding the complex maze of permits and the need to comply with the latest commercial building codes. Roof replacement often requires a permit and must adhere to current building standards, which can be both costly and time-consuming. Reconditioning, however, typically does not require these permits, and you won’t need to upgrade other building elements to meet new code requirements.

Choose Elements Commercial Roofing

At Elements Commercial Roofing, we understand the unique needs of building owners and commercial property managers in the Greater Portland Metro Area. Our expertise in applying CertainTeed silicon coatings ensures that your reconditioned roof will meet the highest standards of quality and durability. Trust us to provide a solution that not only saves you money but also secures your investment over time.

In conclusion, if you’re considering the next steps for your commercial roof, think about the benefits of reconditioning. It’s cost-effective, durable, and less disruptive—and with Elements Commercial Roofing, your roof is in the best hands in the business. Contact us today to learn more about how we can help extend the life of your roof with minimal fuss and maximum benefit.

Protect Your Home

January 12, 2025by revvluvvUncategorized

Some of the most striking images that are shown on TV after storms are those of houses with trees through their roofs. These are also some of the scariest pictures for those whose own homes are within range of a tree that could fall. Here are some ways you can help keep your house from needing such extensive disaster repair services in Portland, Oregon.

TAKE OUT UNWANTED TREES

Some big trees are left in place because they’re truly wanted, but others are there simply because no one ever bothered to take them down. The second kind often started out as small saplings that were easy to ignore. Have a tree service take these trees out for in instant increase in safety.

ELIMINATE TREES THAT ARE IN UNSUITABLE ENVIRONMENTS

Even when a tree is wanted, it may still have to go. This is the case when a tree is in a location where it doesn’t have enough room to develop a proper root system. The same is true if the ground it’s in is perpetually soggy. Both conditions result in trees with poor roots that are likely to rip if the top of the tree is under heavy wind strain.

MAINTAIN DESIRABLE TREES PROPERLY

Trees need to be pruned in a specific way to maintain their strength. They should be pruned evenly so that they have good wind resistance on all sides. In most species, you should also take out branches that have grown up like extra trunks. It’s best to have one main trunk, which is a much stronger configuration. Finally, make sure to avoid overwatering and over fertilization. This will help ensure that the trunk, crown and roots grow in the proper proportions.

For even more tips on preventing catastrophic damage to your home or its contents, give us a call. We’ll be happy to help you get everything properly prepared. Call today

Roofing Material Explained

January 3, 2025by revvluvvCommercialResidential

Houses are comprised of many different parts. The foundation is what holds everything up, the walls create different rooms and the roof is what keeps Mother Nature at bay. Roofs are vitally important to keeping everything else in your home in the best possible condition. A leaky, damaged roof can allow the elements inside your home where they can undermine the overall stability. When you’re in the market for a new roof, you’ve got some very big decisions to make. Finding the right roofer in Fort Lauderdale is no small task. Most roofers in Portland, like Elements Roofing for example, specialize in almost all types of roofing materials. From shingles and tile to metal and gravel, Elements can do it all.  Along with finding the right roofer, deciding what sort of roof you want to install is just as important. Here is a rundown of the most popular choices when it comes to roofing materials.

Plain old shingles

Asphalt shingles are by far the most popular choice when it comes to roofing materials. Not only are they cost-effective and relatively quick to install, they also work great! When installed correctly, a new shingle roof can last for up 20 years. Maybe even longer if regular repairs and maintenance are observed. Asphalt shingles come in two varieties; organic and fiberglass. Organic shingles are generally paper based and covered with asphalt and tar for waterproofing purposes. Fiberglass shingles are essentially the same, but with fiberglass mats rather than paper. Fiberglass is more durable than paper and is also more resistant to fire and water damage.

Classic Tile

Roofs back in ancient times were often made from clay tiles. They were popular for their water-resistance and for the look they achieved. Modern homeowners often go with tile roofs to recreate the look of ancient buildings. Roofing tiles today are made from either clay or concrete and can be molded and dyed into almost any shape or color. Tile is far more durable than asphalt, generally lasting for up to 50 years with regular maintenance. The drawback is, however, the price, as tile is much more expensive. It is also more difficult to install and takes an experienced crew like those at Elements Roofing.

Metal Is King

If you’re really looking for the most durable and long lasting roofing material, metal is truly the way to go. Steel and aluminum are the most popular choices and they come in a large variety of colors and textures to achieve almost any look you want. Metal roofs are incredibly water resistant and can have a life span of 50+ years. They are also great insulators so you’re home heating or cooling bill will probably go down a little bit after installation. Metal is better at resisting damage from wind and rain so you won’t have to worry about leaks and damages.

A roofer in Portland will be able to install all of the above styles, but only Elements Roofing has the experience and know how to get the job done right. If you need a new roof, consider your options carefully before rushing into a decision.

How To Kill Moss!

January 2, 2025by revvluvvResidential

How to Kill Moss?

  1. Take away the shade that the moss is growing in.
  2. Turn its environment extremely acidic or turn it into a base environment (above 7 pH levels).
  3. Take away the moisture or water from the moss.

About Method #1 & Method #3

#1 & #3 can be a little tricky to do for people whose roofs are in a naturally shaded/humid environment. Some options would be to remove trees around the home in order allow extra sunlight in. This could be a fairly expensive solution but would be a solution that would last for years to come.

Roof Cleaner SprayFor those people who have moss or algae growing on their roofs and do not want to remove their trees around their home the solution that would work best for them would be #2. This is most commonly done with roofing cleaning products. (We have shared 3 with you above & included links to reviews left by unhappy and happy customers.)

Remove The Shade

Because moss grows well in shaded areas one way to control moss/remove it from roofs or other areas is to remove its shade. This can be done by removing trees, trimming tree branches to allow more sun to penetrate, or remove bushes and other type of plant life that may be blocking the sun.

This method of moss prevention and removal is highly effective but remember that it may be ineffective if the weather is often overcast and cloudy.

Make its Environment Acidic (below pH 4)

There are many common household items that have a pH level at or below 4. These products are highly effective at killing moss. Using these products with a mixture of water or directly to the moss can kill the plant. Be aware that acid products erode certain types of surfaces. By diluting the mixture you can prevent unwanted corrosion.

  1. White Distilled Vinegar (Apple Cider Vinegar As Well)
  2. Orange Juice
  3. Lemon Juice
  4. Tomato Juice

Make its Environment a Base (Above pH 7)

Since moss grows in a pH environment of 5.0 – 5.5 or 6.0, by changing the environment to a base level it will effectively kill the moss. Below is a list of some common household items that are bases. By mixing these products with water or by applying them directly they can kill moss in yards, off of roofs, siding, decks, or other unwanted areas.

  1. Baking Soda
  2. Baking Powder
  3. Salt
  4. Ammonia
  5. Soap
  6. Bleach (Do not mix bleach and ammonia)
